Iceland volcano eruption melts glacier, causes floods![]() AFP Photo: Lava spews from the Fimmvorduhals volcano near the Eyjafjallajokull glacier in March 2010. Wed Apr 14, 4:51 PM REYKJAVIK (AFP) - Iceland's second volcano eruption in less than a month melted part of a glacier and caused heavy flooding on Wednesday, forcing up to 800 people to evacuate and grounding some flights over Norway. "We have two heavy floods coming out from the melting of the Eyjafjallajokull glacier," local police spokesman Roegnvaldur Olafsson told AFP from near the site of the eruption in the south of the country. So far, "no lives are in danger but we have evacuated the area and all roads are closed," he said, adding that the ongoing eruption was bigger than the blast at the nearby Fimmvorduhals volcano last month. Wow, this is turning into BIG news.... Iceland Volcano Causing Air Travel Problems For Millions ![]() In this image made available by the Icelandic Coastguard, taken, Wednesday April 14, 2010, smoke and steam rises from the volcano under the Eyjafjallajokull glacier in Iceland, which erupted for the second time in less than a month, melting ice, shooting smoke and steam into the air and forcing hundreds of people to flee rising floodwaters. Authorities evacuated 800 residents from around the glacier as rivers rose by up to 10 feet (3 meters). Emergency officials and scientists said the eruption under the ice cap was 10 to 20 times more powerful than one last month, and carried a much greater risk of widespread flooding. Thousand of flights were canceled, stranding tens of thousands of passengers, and officials said it was not clear when it would be safe enough to fly again. In a sobering comment, one scientist in Iceland said the ejection of volcanic ash — and therefore possible disruptions in air travel — could continue for days or even weeks. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/36543312/ns/world_news-europe/ From the previous eruption a few weeks ago... ![]() ![]() ![]() And who can resist the chance for a barbecue? ![]() Yeah, that's a hot dog at the end of the stick. http://news.discovery.com/earth/iceland-volcano-aurora.html |

...There's a bigger problem ...Initially the concern was that the volcano would melt the glacier ice and cause flooding. But now there is concern that the volcano could have cause even bigger eruption from powerful volcano of Katla beneath Mydaljoekull. ...There is a history pattern that has the Eyjafjallajokull setting off the larger Katla volcano. The large eruption could release a large amount of sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere. The last time that the Katla had a major eruption was in 1918. http://www.bestsyndication.com/?q=20100323_recent_iceland_volcano_activity_bigger_eruption_katla_glacier_flooding.htm Volcano could mean cooling, acid rain 'Not like Pinatubo' so far, but potential is there ![]() Smoke and steam hang over the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland on Thursday. msnbc.com staff and news service reports updated 1 hour, 8 minutes ago If Iceland's active volcano gets even more active, Icelanders and air travelers won't be the only ones impacted. Gases from past large volcanoes have actually lowered Earth's temperatures, triggered lung ailments, caused acid rain and thinned our protective ozone layer. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/36556083/ns/us_news-environment/ |

Experts: No end to ash in sight![]() Meteorologists say the dust cloud will continue to blanket northern Europe (CNN) -- Weather experts predicted Friday that a volcanic ash causing chaos to air traffic across Europe would affect the region well into the weekend and possibly beyond as the dust cloud continued to spread. Scientists said it was too soon to predict when the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland would cease spewing ash, raising the prospect of thousands more grounded flights in coming days. Prevailing westerly winds are expected to fan the massive plume of dust from an erupting volcano in Iceland further east and north, according to predictions from the London Ash Advisory Center. By 07:00 GMT Saturday (7 p.m. ET) the cloud traveling at up to 9,000 meters (30,000 feet) is forecast to be covering parts of Russia, Poland, Finland and other East European countries while continuing to affect the UK, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Denmark and Netherlands... http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/europe/04/16/volcano.weather/index.html |

Apparently, Volcanic ash is brutal on your lungs...![]() Iceland volcano chaos: Health chiefs say stay inside if breathing is a problem By Andrew Gregory 17/04/2010 Health chiefs in Britain warned of the dangers of breathing in volcanic ash yesterday as the dust began to fall across the country. People with breathing difficulties, such as asthma, were advised not to go outside if they see ash settling. If they have to venture out they should wear a mask, said experts. The World Health Organisation initially sparked confusion when it admitted it did not know the precise risks presented by the ash cloud and urged everyone to stay inside. It later revised its advice in line with the British health experts, but a spokesman insisted the microscopic dust could still be "dangerous". He added: "We're very concerned about it. These particles, when inhaled, can reach the peripheral regions of the lungs and can cause problems - especially for people with asthma or respiratory problems. "Those who venture outside might want to consider a mask."... Read More Experts warn Iceland volcano activity increasing 17/04/2010 Activity has increased at an erupting Icelandic volcano, causing an ash plume to rise more than five miles into the air, a geologist said today. Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson of the University of Iceland says winds have cleared visibility for scientists and today will be the first day they can fly above the volcano to assess the activity. Once scientists determine how much ice has melted, it will be easier to say how long the eruption could last. An ash plume that has disrupted air travel across Europe has been caused by hot magma being cooled quickly by the melting ice cap. Gudmundsson says as long as there is enough ice, more plumes could form - causing even more travel disruption. http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2010/04/17/experts-warn-iceland-volcano-activity-increasing-115875-22192153/ |

Man what absolutely beautiful pictures. There is something very disturbing about this eruption, the fact that so many nations are being effected and having so many airline flights "cancelled". I see it as a word from God in His mercy. |

Volcano Spews More Ash, Spawns Wider Flight Chaos![]() A lingering volcanic ash plume forced extended no-fly restrictions over much of Europe on Saturday, as Icelandic scientists warned that volcanic activity had increased and showed no sign of abating — a portent of more travel chaos to come. Scientists say that because the volcano is situated below a glacial ice cap, the magma is being cooled quickly, causing explosions and plumes of grit that can be catastrophic to plane engines if prevailing winds are right. "The activity has been quite vigorous overnight, causing the eruption column to grow," Icelandic geologist Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson told The Associated Press on Saturday. "It's the magma mixing with the water that creates the explosivity. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be an end in sight." An expansive cloud of grit hovered over parts of western Europe on Saturday, triggering extended flight bans that stranded people around the globe. Continued volcanic activity could produce more plumes if the weather patterns stay the same. The Icelandic Meteorological Office said the amount of ash in the plume grew Saturday and that the vast ash cloud is continuing to travel south and southeast. Scientists had planned to fly over the volcano to see how much ice has melted to determine how much longer the eruption could spew ash, but the Icelandic Coast Guard said Saturday's flight had been postponed. Aviation experts say the volcanic plume has caused the worst travel disruption Europe — and the world — has ever seen.... Read More |

Glaciologist: Katla Only Needs a Nudge Glaciologist Helgi Björnsson is concerned that the current volcanic eruption in Eyjafjallajökull glacier could cause the neighboring volcano Katla to erupt as well, which could have much more serious consequences. ![]() The volcano Katla is located underneath the Mýrdalsjökull icecap. Photo by Páll Stefánsson. “The maximum flow in glacial bursts caused by Katla can be fifty or one hundred times more voluminous than what we have seen flow out of Gígjökull [an Eyjafjallajökull glacial tongue]. When the flood comes you better make a run for it,” Björnsson told mbl.is. Katla is hidden underneath the Mýrdalsjökull icecap. “There are eruption channels between Eyjafjallajökull and Katla and magma could shoot into the Katla volcano. Katla might only need a nudge,” Björnsson said. The glaciologist added that what we are witnessing now is a multiplex and unique spectacle of fire and ice. As the eruption in Eyjafjallajökull is still going strong, people should be aware that it might behave similarly as in the last eruption, in 1821. At that time the eruption began shortly before Christmas in 1821 and carried on for more than a year, until after New Year’s Eve 1823, Björnsson pointed out. http://www.icelandreview.com/icelandreview/daily_news/?cat_id=40764&ew_0_a_id=360895 |

Volcano heat map: ( watching it from the beginning, you can see how far it progressed) VOLCANOES: Volcanoes (burning sulfur/ brimstone) in scripture represented punishment and torment. Gen 19:15-16, 24-35 NLT When the morning dawned, the angels urged Lot to hurry, saying, "Arise, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the punishment of the city." ....... 24 Then the LORD rained down fire and burning sulfur from the heavens on Sodom and Gomorrah. 25 He utterly destroyed them, along with the other cities and villages of the plain, eliminating all life — people, plants, and animals alike. Deut 29:22-26 NKJV so that the coming generation of your children who rise up after you, and the foreigner who comes from a far land, would say, when they see the plagues of that land and the sicknesses which the LORD has laid on it: 23'The whole land is brimstone , salt, and burning; it is not sown, nor does it bear, nor does any grass grow there, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in His anger and His wrath.' 24 All nations would say, 'Why has the LORD done so to this land? What does the heat of this great anger mean?' 25 Then people would say: 'Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt; 26 for they went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods that they did not know and that He had not given to them. Rev 9:18-21 NKJV By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed — by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone which came out of their mouths. 19 For their power is in their mouth and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents, having heads; and with them they do harm. 20 But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship demons, and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk. 21 And they did not repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts. Rev 20:10 NKJV The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. Rev 21:8 NKJV But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."
