Floods in China and Burma kill over 250

The deadliest and most destructive weather-related disaster on the planet so far this year is occurring in southern China and northern Burma, where a week of heavy rains has caused flooding that has claimed over 250 lives. The heavy rains and floods ravaging 10 southern Chinese provinces had killed 199 and left 123 missing as of 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, a Ministry of Civil Affairs statement said. Damage is estimated at $6.2 billion. Floods and landslides in neighboring areas of Myanmar (Burma) have claimed at least 63 lives in the past week.

Heavy rain floods southern Alberta

Unprecedented weather Hundreds evacuated from rural towns, city centres, state of emergency declared

- Heavy rain and thunderstorms hit southern Alberta yesterday, prompting fears of further damage to roads, bridges and homes.

The river and tributaries that run through Medicine Hat, Alta., had begun to recede on the weekend, officials said. But with another 20 to 40 millimetres of rain expected to fall through yesterday, city officials said they would not lift the state of emergency.

"This is an unprecedented event in this area," said Jack Hayden, the minister of agriculture. "No one's ever seen it."

in the northeastern state of Alagoas.

Severe flooding in Brazil has decimated towns in the Northeast, killing at least 41 people and leaving more than 120,000 homeless, The Associated Press reported Tuesday.

The torrential rains, which started last week, dumped a month's worth of water on the states of Alagoas and neighboring Pernambuco, destroying small villages.

"I lost everything from one hour to the next," Nelito Sousa, a 32-year-old bricklayer, told the O Jornal newspaper. "The water came quickly and knocked down house after house."

Local officials estimate that 600 people are still missing from the storms, though that number may change as the chaos subsides, the AP reported.

More than a million evacuated in China over flood threat

BEIJING (AFP) – More than a million people living along rivers in China's south have been evacuated with water rising to dangerous levels, state media said Saturday, as torrential rains left at least 88 dead.
The government said more than 1.4 million residents living on river banks and in low-lying areas had had to move, according to the official China Daily.
Zhang Zhitong, deputy director of the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, said China's second-largest waterway, the Pearl River, which crosses the south, had breached warning marks on Thursday.

Rescuers search for missing from floods in southern France
(AFP)
DRAGUIGNAN, France — Rescuers in southern France on Friday cleared animal carcasses and searched for 13 people still missing, three days after flash floods killed 25 people.
Emergency teams cleared hundreds of carcasses of sheep and horses that drowned in the floodwaters, working quickly to avoid water contamination, a state official said.
"There is an intense mobilisation in these operations. We are tackling the carcasses lying in water as a priority," said Simon Babre, a deputy to the state prefect.
President Nicolas Sarkozy announced he will travel to the devastated Var region, off the Mediterranean coast, on Monday for a first-hand look at the disaster.
Authorities in the Var, a popular holiday region, put the death toll at 25 on Thursday after the floodwaters engulfed streets in torrents of mud and drove people onto the roofs of their homes.

Storms pelt Midwest, cause flooding in Indiana

(AP) – 6 hours ago

AVON, Ind. — Another round of potentially severe weather is firing up in Illinois and Indiana, as officials deal with the aftermath of storms that crashed through the Midwest overnight.

Flash flood warnings are posted in central Indiana following two days of heavy thunderstorms. Water from a retention lake has overflowed an earthen dam west of Indianapolis. Firefighters have rescued at least three people trapped by rising water.

In southern Wisconsin, an apparent tornado damaged or destroyed dozens of homes in Eagle, where the fire chief is warning people to stay away because of live wires on the ground. Officials say all residents are accounted for after a warning siren failed before the storm hit.

In central Illinois, heavy rains created flash floods while witnesses reported tornadoes near the Indiana border.

‘It’s a sad day’ — Crest could be 10 feet higher than June 1

Disastrous. Unstoppable. Historic. Unprecedented.
All words used to describe what city, county and state officials warn is an imminent assault on all residents of the Souris River Valley. The highest flows ever recorded on the Souris are approaching a city whose defenses are destined to be over run. Can the city hold?

Dikes currently in place, recently improved greatly to combat high flows, are now expected to disappear under the traveling torrent. The amount of water flowing with a vengeance down the Souris River Valley is forecast to inundate Minot to a level seven to eight feet higher than the catastrophic and benchmark flood of 1969.

Saddened with that horrific knowledge, officials announced during a late afternoon press conference Monday that very little can be done to stop the powerful onslaught. Massive secondary dikes that were built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to save much of the town from the previous high on the Souris this year fall far short of defending against the impending and rapid rise of the Souris.
