Remember, in spite of all the chaos, bloodshed, and strife that has roiled Egypt and Iraq, how things turn out in the end:

Isaiah 19

23 In that day shall there be a highway out of Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrian shall come into Egypt, and the Egyptian into Assyria, and the Egyptians shall serve with the Assyrians.

24 In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria, even a blessing in the midst of the land:

25 Whom the LORD of hosts shall bless, saying, Blessed be Egypt my people, and Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel mine inheritance.

Now, having learned about their cruelty and atrocities from the book of Nahum and even from archaeologists who translated Nineveh's cuneiform tablets, I sometimes find it hard to understand how the Lord would bless Assyria at the end of the day. Especially when He consigned others like Edom and Babylon to complete destruction.

Then I read articles like the one below and it starts to become clear:

Iraq's beleaguered Christians make final stand on the Mosul frontline.

Some Christian families from Mosul have sought refuge in St Matthew’s Monastery, writes Richard Spencer. Others vow to take a stand against the Islamists - whatever the cost.

Speaking of why he and his men were refusing to give up and go, Capt Jacob said was determined to resist the jihadists and their allies, who last week over-ran most of the rest of northern Iraq.

“We will stay here despite everything,” he announced. “All these armed groups we have seen, but nevertheless we will remain. We love our Christian way of life, we love our churches and we love our community.”

Assyrians, Syrians, Copts and Chaldeans are some of the oldest Christian communities in this world, dating all the way back to the apostle Paul. When Saul set out on the road to Damascus, there already was a believer Ananias at Damascus. These peoples have endured persecution and survived amid a sea of Islam to the present day. Perhaps they have a special place in God's scheme of things for the Millennial Kingdom.
